The Real Job Market

I keep hearing about how good the economy is and how there are so many more jobs out there and that the unemployment rate is good and low. Of course that number doesn't include people who aren't receiving unemployment benefits. If you aren't on the rolls you don't count. You don't exist.

For the past few months I've been using both the job boards, CareerBuilder and Monster, in addition to several association and professional job boards. I joined 1,600 other job seekers at a recent career fair, which I can only describe as a resume deposit event and not much more than that. And here it is, on the soon to be eve of a New Year, and I'm still looking.

HR professionals, please stop using the same text for your rejections letters. What text you say, please allow me to quote from my most recent letter.

“...While your experience is impressive, another candidate more closely met our requirements.”

Now, maybe it's because I had insider info that there were 18 other people who interviewed for this position that this polite rebuff falls a little flat. Maybe I'm just being overly picky. But honestly, they all say the exact same thing. And it begins to suck knowing your impressive but not impressive enough for the nth time...oh wait, check that. I've only gotten a few rejection letters. The rest haven't even bothered so much as an e-mail or a call. And that, I feel, is far worse.

Tomorrow's meeting...another creative placement firm.

What's important is that you don't give up, no matter how depressing or frustrating it gets. I too will be in your shoes soon enough! I hope 2006 is a better year for you.

Have you considered LinkedIn? I know there are a lot of recruiters on there.
